Once upon a time there were three billy goats, who’s name was “Gruff”. They all lived on a hill but there wasn’t much food to eat and they were always very hungry. So one day they decided to go and live on a hill on the other side of the valley which was always full of grass. There they could eat as much as they wanted and make themselves fat and healthy.
On the way to their new home there was a bridge they had to cross; and under the bridge lived a great big ugly troll with eyes as big as melons and a nose as long as a carrot.
First to approach the bridge was the youngest Billy Goat Gruff.
“Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap” went his hooves as he walked over the bridge.
“Who’s that tripping over my bridge?” roared the troll.
“Oh, it’s only me, the tiniest Billy Goat Gruff”
“And where are you going” asked the troll?
“I’m going to the hill on the other side of the valley to eat lots and lots of grass,” said the billy goat, with such a small voice.
“Oh no your not!” said the troll, “I’m coming to gobble you up.”
“Please don’t eat me, I’m too little,” said the billy goat. “If you wait until my brother comes I’m sure you will be happier. He’s bigger than me and much more tasty.”
The troll thought about this for a second before saying, “Alright, well, be off with you then,” and the smallest little billy goat trotted off over the bridge and onto the new hill.
A little while later the second Billy Goat Gruff came to cross the bridge.
Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap, went his hooves on the bridge.
“Who’s that tripping over my bridge?” roared the troll.
“Oh, it’s me”, said the second Billy Goat Gruff” who didn’t have such a small voice, “and I’m going over to the new hill to eat lots of grass with my brother,”.
“Oh no your not” said the troll “I’m coming to gobble you up.”
“Please don’t take me said the second Billy goat, ‘wait until my other brother comes along. He’s even bigger than me and much more tasty.”
The troll thought about this for a second before saying, “Very well! Be off with you then,” and the second billy goat trotted away over the bridge to join his brother on the new hill.
After a few more minutes the biggest Billy Goat Gruff approached the bridge.
Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap, went the bridge, but the biggest billy goat was so heavy that the bridge creaked and groaned under him.
“Who’s that tramping over my bridge?” roared the troll.
“It is I! The biggest Billy Goat Gruff” said the billy goat, who had an ugly hoarse voice of his own.
“Then I am coming to gobble you up,” roared the troll. “Well, come along then” said the biggest billy goat, not scared of the nasty troll.
The troll started to walk closer to the billy goat and just as he was about to reach him, the biggest billy goat lowered his head and charged at the troll. In a second the troll went flying into the air and landed with a splash into the stream below.
The biggest billy goat then walked on over the bridge with a big smile on his face and joined his brothers on the new hill where they lived happily ever after eating as much grass as they wanted all day long.
